Tomljanovic comes out of a decent 2021

Eliminated in the first round of Adelaide International last year, Ajla Tomljanovic is hoping for better returns this year as she begins her campaign against Heather Watson on Monday.

Last season was one of the best for Tomljanovic, who reached her first Grand Slam quarter-final at Wimbledon but lost to compatriot and future champion Ashleigh Barty.

Yet to win a WTA title she couldn’t add to her four final appearances in 2021, still world number one. 45 would be happy with a 30-24 season, which also saw her make her fourth-round debut at Indian Wells and reach the third round of the US Open for the first time. Additionally, she also earned her fourth career top 10 victory, beating Garbine Muguruza in straight sets in the second round at Indian Wells.

The 28-year-old Croatian also played in Adelaide in 2020, winning her first-round match against Yulia Putintseva but falling to Simona Halep in the second round.

Last year she was stunned by Australian qualifier Storm Sanders in the first round.

Will she be able to go further in the tournament this year?

Watson on a six-game losing streak

Heather Watson has not won a tour-level game since defeating Aliaksandra Sasnovich in the first round in Cincinnati in August 2021. Qualified in that tournament, Watson has been eliminated in the next round by Ash Barty and since then, she no longer won a singles match.

The 29-year-old Briton was forced to withdraw from her first-round match against Ana Bogdan at the Chicago Women’s Open and the losing streak continued over the next four tournaments as she faced Kaja Juvan in the US Open, Sorana Cirstea in Portoroz, Sloane Stephens in Indian Wells and Clara Tauson in Tenerife, Spain, all in the opening rounds.

After losing the last six games, Watson will be eager to get back on the road to victory. She ended the 2021 season with a dismal record of 11-21, which saw her end the season as world No.72, 14 places below her season opener of 58. The tournament only where she did well last year was in Birmingham, where she reached the semi-finals before losing to Ons Jabeur.

Four-time touring champion Watson will make her Adelaide debut this season, hoping to start the New Year on a high note.
