Garbine Muguruza vs. Paula Badosa Face to Face
It will be a first meeting between the two.
Muguruza ends Kontaveit’s streak
Garbine Muguruza ended Anett Kontaveit’s 12-game winning streak in the final match of the group stage to finish second in group Teotihuacán and end Karolina Pliskova’s chances of progress.
After Pliskova beat Barbora Krejcikova, the world number one. 5 Muguruza needed to win her game to qualify and that’s exactly what the Spaniard did, beating the Estonian 6-4, 6-4 in one hour and 27 minutes.
Muguruza served seven aces, saved all three break points she faced and smashed Kontaveit once in each set to end the latter’s streak that started in Moscow.
The sixth seed started the tournament with a straight set loss to Pliskova, to the Czech player 4-6, 6-2, 7-6 (8-6). However, she earned her first tournament win in the following match, overcoming a set deficit to defeat Barbora Krejcikova 2-6, 6-3, 6-4.
The 28-year-old, who is making the WTA final for the fourth time, is making the semifinals of the year-end tournament for the second time. She achieved the feat in 2015, when she won all of her group matches but lost to Agnieszka Radwanska in the semi-finals.
After winning two titles this year, in Dubai and Chicago, she hopes to end the year with another, which will bring her total to 10 titles. However, she is two wins away from this milestone and faces a difficult semi-final against her fit compatriot.
Badosa’s winning race ends
Paula Badosa had already reserved her place in the semi-finals after two dominant wins in the tournament, but she couldn’t keep the perfect record intact as she lost to Iga Swiatek in her last group game. Chichén-Itzá.
Badosa, who had beaten Aryna Sabalenka 6-4, 6-0 and Maria Sakkari 7-6 (7-4), 6-4, fell to Swiatek 5-7, 4-6 in an hour-39- minutes.
The Spaniard got a break in every set against the Polish player, but it was Swiatek, who beat her opponent twice in straight sets to win the contest and end Badosa’s eight-game winning streak. The winning streak began at the Indian Wells Open where she defeated Victoria Azarenka in the final to win her first-ever WTA 1000 title.
The 24-year-old started the season as world No.70 but rose to No.10, thanks to her first two WTA titles. She now aims to end the year on a high note.
Muguruza v Badosa Prediction and Tip
It promises to be an entertaining semi-final between the two Spaniards and it may take a third set to determine the winner. While Badosa is in great shape, she may find it difficult to beat the experienced Muguruza. Expect the latter to overtake Badosa in three.
