The Washington Capitals are back home and will wear the third replacement blue W jersey tonight against the Philadelphia Flyers. The Caps just suffered two losses on their trip to Florida, but they still scored a point in their last game as a return would force overtime.

Nicklas Backstrom was on the ice this morning before morning practice, skating with Caps conditioning coach Mark Nemish. Although today is the first day he can be released from the Long Term Injury Reserve or LTIR, he is not yet off the list.

Recently, The Athletic’s Tarik El-Bashir sat down with Brian MacLellan for a Q&A (subscription required). GMBM explained that the Caps are taking a cautious approach.

“We are careful here. We have a good plan and we’re going to make sure it’s in the right place at the right time.

Tonight is the start of a two-game homestand for the Caps. Captain Alex Ovechkin enters tonight’s game two goals behind Brett Hull (741 goals) for fourth place on the NHL’s all-time goals list. He also has two assists under 600 career assists. He would be the ninth active player to reach this mark.

Besides, Evgeny Kuznetsov is one step away from overtaking Dennis Maruk for 11th on the Caps all-time franchise points list. He also has three assists under 300 career assists. The Caps recorded a point in nine of their first 10 games for a second straight season, posting a 5-1-4 record. The Caps are also undefeated at home in regulation with a 3-0-3 record.

Last season in the MassMutual East Division, the Caps went 6-2-0 against the Flyers with Ovechkin leading with 12 points with eight goals and four assists in six games.
